WellHouse Breaks Ground on New Home for Trafficked Minors
First Home for Trafficked Minors in Alabama Underway
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (October 10, 2020)—The WellHouse has broken ground on a new residential care facility for underage victims of sex trafficking. One of only 40 known programs for trafficked minors in the nation, the new home will offer emergency accommodation, safe housing and recovery programming to victims under 18 years old.
The 10-bed facility will be built at The WellHouse’s 60-acre safe-house campus outside of Birmingham, Alabama. The average number of beds at programs for trafficking victims is eight. With the campus expansion, survivor capacity will reach 50, and a new chapel building will be constructed as well.
“We look forward to providing next-level care to children who are in dire need of safety and healing”
“We look forward to providing next-level care to children who are in dire need of safety and healing, after trafficking, and we hope to forge the path for other organizations to follow,” said WellHouse Chief Executive Officer Carolyn Potter.
The Housing Affordability Trust granted The WellHouse funding for the construction of this new home, which will be constructed by Nathan Lovvorn, and supplemented by volunteers from CrossPoint Church and Gardendale First Baptist Church.
The WellHouse is one of the largest providers of comprehensive services for female survivors of sex trafficking in the United States. Since inception in 2010, it has provided housing and care for over 500 victims, many referred through relationships with local and state law enforcement, Homeland Security, FBI, and special street operations.
Adult survivors of human trafficking who come to The WellHouse receive intensive trauma therapy, medical care, job and life skills classes, equine and art therapies, health and wellness coaching, spiritual guidance, assistance with educational goals, addiction recovery, and immersive job experience. The same level of services will be provided to minors in WellHouse Child, also to include on-site education and support for families whose children have experienced trafficking.
Construction is expected to complete in early 2021.
